Beauty Basics: Cleansing Mistakes to Avoid To Get Your Best Skin Yet

We all know taking care of our skin is important, and likely, the first step you learned in creating a skincare routine was washing your face. And it seems simple, right? Rinse, lather, rinse, dry. But actually, there are small yet harmful cleansing mistakes you may be making without knowing. Don’t worry… we’re here to help make sure you have the most radiant and hydrated skin possible.

Choose the Right Face Wash

This seems basic, but with all of the products at your disposal, it can be tricky to find the cleanser that it perfect for your skin type. Whether your skin is dry, oily, or a combination of both, you should research and test out which type of face wash is best for you. This could be trial and error, but always make sure to choose a cleanser that is packed with skin-loving ingredients, that won’t be too harsh on your skin. At Wander, we love our Drift Away Cleanser because it’s packed with hydrating and nourishing ingredients, and deeply cleans your skin.<product>1</product>

Wash Your Hands

Throughout the day, you are constantly exposed to germs and dirt. From touching your phone all day, to holding the rails on public transportation, our hands collect a scary amount of bacteria. While washing your hands often is always a good practice (because no one wants to get sick), it's especially important to give your hands a good scrub before touching your face. The last thing you want is to make your skin dirtier while trying to get it clean!

Don’t Over Exfoliate

Exfoliating regularly is important to keep your skin looking fresh and soft. Exfoliating dead skin helps even and brighten skin tone, and will keep your skin glowy. However, you can over exfoliate. If you exfoliate everyday, you’re never giving your skin a chance to rest. It will become irritated, and will strip the skin of natural oils that are imperative to its function. We suggest using our gentle BRB Multipolish two to three times a week to keep the skin hydrated and healthy.<product>2</product>

Sink Over Shower

While we’re all about multitasking to save time, washing your face in the shower isn’t a great idea. First, your skin is likely way too hot from the steam and the warmth of the shower, and it can cause irritation. Second, the residue from leftover shampoo or conditioner can clog your pores. So while it’s tempting, try to skip the shower scrub and opt to wash your face in the sink. What’s a few more minutes sacrifice in order to achieve shining skin?

Use A Special Face-Drying Towel...

Along the same lines, you should have a special towel (try a washcloth or a hand towel) for drying your face. You want to make sure your towel is as clean as your freshly washed skin so it’s best not to use the same towel that you use to dry the rest of your body on your face. Additionally, make sure the towel you are using is nice and soft, and gently pat (don’t scrub!) dry. Using a worn and scratchy towel can cause the skin to become red and inflamed, and no one wants that.

...And Make Sure to Wash It

Like your hands, your towel collects bacteria at an alarming rate. The longer the towel stays damp, the longer yeast, mold, and bacteria viruses stay active. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t want those creatures anywhere near my face. Dermatologists suggest washing your face towel or using a new one everyday. We know that seems daunting and maybe a little wasteful, so try to make sure you’re at least switching to a clean towel two to three times a week.

Turn Down (or Up!) the Heat

Like we mentioned, washing your face in the shower can irritate your skin because the water is way too hot for your face. But did you know that washing your face with icy cold water can irritate it as well? This skin on your face is sensitive, so the best approach is to find a temperature that is juuuust right.

Lock in the Moisture

The final cleansing mistake to avoid is waiting too long to moisturize after you finish washing your face or not using a moisturizer at all. Believe it or not, all skin types (even naturally oily) need a moisturizer. After washing your face, apply a moisturizer to your skin within the next 30 to 60 seconds. A moisturizer acts as a sort of glue to lock in hydration from the water, and your skin will continue to hydrate hours after the wash. Don’t skip out on this final step.
